The Shoemaker’s Cottage

My 2nd great-grandfather, Daniel O’Mullan, moved to Moyaver from Mount Hamilton around the time he married Isabella Scally in 1866. He and his family lived in a cottage on the Limepark Estate until about 1910.

Limepark was leased by the Craig family from the Macartney family. The Craigs rented all of Lot 1A from the Macartneys but only occupied a portion of it – Lot 1Aa. They sublet the rest of t he land to other people, but not to the O’Mullans.

The O’Mullan’s didn’t rent land, nor would I expect them to – they weren’t farmers. Daniel was a shoemaker. Isabella was a dressmaker. Their eldest son Patrick worked at the Limepark’s dairy and their second son Daniel William worked for the post office. But Arthur Craig was definitely Daniel O’Mullan’s landlord, so the O’Mullans must have lived on Lot 1Aa.

There is a string of attached cottages adjacent to the Craig’s big house on Lot 1Aa at Limepark, and there are workshops interspersed between them. I suspect the O’Mullans rented one of these cottages because their home is described in the census as having 2 rooms, stone walls, a slate or iron roof and 2 windows in the front. This fits with the existing attached cottages at Limepark.

My grandfather John Patrick O’Mullan and his father Daniel William Mullan were both born in that 2 room cottage, which at one time housed a family of 6. I can’t tell you which one was theirs – I wish I could – but you can rent any one of them for yourself. They are available for vacation rental and I stayed in Ned’s Cottage.
