Aaron Forman. Records

Aaron Forman is my 9th great-grandfather. He founded Flushing (1645) moved with his parents to Hempstead (1657-1671), lived in Jamaica, NY (1671), then Oyster Bay (1677). At the end of his life, he followed his 3 sons to Monmouth County, NJ.

James Brintzinghoffer ← Theodore C. Brintzinghoffer ← Catherine Forman ← William Spencer Forman ← Robert Forman ← William Forman ← Lewis Forman ← Aaron Forman ← Samuel Forman ← Aaron Forman

Aaron Forman is my 9th great-grandfather. His father was 1 of 18 men, mostly English, who received a charter to settle Vlissingen [Flushing] on Long Island in 1645 from Willem Kieft, Director of the Dutch West India company. Flushing’s early records were destroyed in a late 18th century fire so we know nothing about his time there, except that he didn’t stay long.

He moved with his parents to Hempstead and appears in the record there from 1657-1671. He was a Townsman for Hempstead. By 1671, he was living in Jamaica, ‘in the North Riding of New Yorkshire upon Long Island’. He then followed his parents to Oyster Bay by 1677 but, at the end of his life, followed his 3 sons to Monmouth County, NJ.

His father died in Oyster Bay and made arrangements for his sons Moses and Samuel in conveyances there. Aaron’s inheritance appears mostly in his father’s will and that property shows up later in disputes with his brother Moses.

Records of the Town of Jamaica, Long Island, New York. Vol. 1. 28 FEB 1777/8. Aaron Forman is gone from Jamaica by 1777.

There is an additional deed from 11 APR 1693 which is only in print and not online but it establishes that Aaron was in Monmouth County by this date. Described in Anne Spottswood Dandridge’s Forman Family Genealogy.

“Aaron Forman removed to Monmouth Co., New Jersey, before April 11, 1693: the date of a deed in which he is described as of the County of Monmouth and Province of East Jersey, planter, and by which he conveys land at Oyster Bay to ‘my son Alexander Forman, which lands were granted  unto me, Aaron Forman by a gift of my father, Robert Forman. (Records of  Oyster Bay, Liber 3, page 277). This deed is signed by Dorothy Forman, Aaron Forman, Jr., and Samuel Forman, although they are not named therein, showing  that Aaron had also a son Samuel. “
